Climate variance

Annual negative

The coastal waterways in this climatic zone receive a relatively low freshwater input throughout the year (rainfall histogram). Hydrodynamic function is therefore generally negative (or evaporation-dominated), for example negative wave-dominated estuaries , and negative tide-dominated estuaries . Tidal creeks and coastal lagoons are also common in regions where freshwater runoff is low.

Annual positive

The coastal waterways in this climatic zone receive a relatively constant freshwater input throughout the year (rainfall histogram). Hydrodynamic function is therefore positive, for example positive wave-dominated estuaries , and positive tide-dominated estuaries .

Summer negative/winter positive

The coastal waterways in this climatic zone receive the majority of their rainfall (and freshwater input) during the winter period (rainfall histogram). Consequently, during the cooler months, hydrodynamic function is positive, for example positive wave-dominated estuaries .

During the summer, or dry period, the coastal waterways receive a relatively low freshwater input. Hydrodynamic function can therefore become negative (or evaporation-dominated), for example negative wave-dominated estuaries . Tidal creeks and coastal lagoons are also common in areas that experience low freshwater runoff.
