- Typically flat, rocky coastline with very few estuaries
- Estuaries that do exist are very small and often choked with sand
- Extreme low rainfall throughout the year
- Very strong wave energy due to exposure to Southern Ocean swells
- Many of the estuaries are degraded, some pristine saltmarshes and saltflats remain away from areas modified by humans
