Northeast Coast Geomorphological Region

  1. Mainly tide-dominated estuaries, river deltas and tidal creeks
  2. Most rain in summer, little rain in winter
  3. Wave energy is low due to protection from the Great Barrier Reef and wide continental shelf
  4. Tidal ranges are mostly moderate to low in most of the region and high in central Queensland
  5. Coastline comprises rocky headlands, sandy beaches, and wide expanses of mudflats
  6. Mangroves are abundant along channels and extend relatively far inland
  7. Many estuaries in the south are modified due to extensive land clearing and in the north most are near pristine
