- Estuaries are mostly small to medium sized wave-dominated or barrier estuaries
- High rainfall during winter, very dry during summer
- Strong wave energy from the Indian Ocean , and the lowest tidal range in Australia
- Coastline is very flat with numerous rocky headlands in the south
- Many estuaries in modified condition and during summer can suffer the effects of nutrient runoff from the land causing algal blooms
- Only one near-pristine estuary (Broke Inlet) in this region
